Forest's Striker Fires Twice as Nottingham Forest Conclude Europa League Campaign with Victory over Ferencvaros

Forest striker in action
The Brazilian forward has now notched eleven strikes in all competitions for the club this season.

Match Summary

  • The home side were already through to the play-offs.
  • A Ferencvaros defender own goal gives Nottingham Forest a first-half lead.
  • Igor Jesus' fifth goal in Europe puts Forest in control.
  • Forward adds a third with a clinical effort in the second half.
  • The midfielder rounds off a great display with a penalty.

The Brazilian attacker scored twice as Nottingham Forest concluded the league phase of the European competition with a convincing win against Ferencvaros at the home stadium.

The hosts had previously guaranteed a place in the knockout round play-offs and entered this game with a slim possibility of reaching the top eight, even though they needed other matches to go their way.

Those results failed to materialize but this assured display will give Forest fans belief that their team can come through the two-legged play-off to advance to the round of sixteen.

Kristoffer Zachariassen did hit the post with a headed effort inside the first 10 minutes for the visitors – who are managed by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from that point forward.

They broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when Ryan Yates' cross was turned into his own net by the defender and doubled the lead shortly after – the striker squeezing a shot in at the far post for his tenth strike of the season.

The forward's eleventh goal arrived early in the second half when he made a perfectly-timed run to break clear of the defence and then place a shot beyond the shot-stopper.

The third strike killed off the visitors' hopes of making a comeback and instead Forest scored again when the impressive James McAtee converted a spot-kick after a foul by the unfortunate Otvos inside the box on Dan Ndoye.

Europe's secondary club competition qualifying round draw is scheduled on Friday, 30 January (12:00 GMT), where Nottingham Forest could be drawn against either the Turkish side or the Greek club.

"It is not just the scoreline, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these guys to do collectively well, the entire team," said manager Sean Dyche.

"This is another step, but it is a good one."

Team Breakdown: Jesus Catches Eye as New Signing Observes from Stands

Jesus has been a revelation for Forest in Europe this season with half of his 11 goals scored in the tournament.

His brace also means he has got a trio of strikes in his previous two outings and the threat of competition for his position in the forward line could be providing motivation.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was recently signed on loan and he was observing this match from the directors' box.

That may well have been on the striker's thoughts as he was impressive against the opposition, delivering two excellent goals and generally being a constant threat to the visitors' defence with his speed and runs.

The forward was not alone in impressing, with James McAtee producing his best performance in a Forest jersey since signing from the champions last summer, while the Swiss international also impressed.

Such positive showings will give the club some renewed optimism as they turn their attention to pulling further away from the Premier League relegation zone when they host Crystal Palace on Sunday.

"All you can ask for is a response," added the manager.

"I have always trusted their commitment or their loyalty or honesty. It is just about displaying your quality.

"McAtee was excellent and Dan was incredibly lively. Igor got another couple and these are positive indicators."
