Larian Studios Details Its Implementation of Generative AI for Upcoming Project

The developer behind acclaimed RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its new project, creating significant hype within the industry. However, follow-up comments from the studio's co-founder have introduced nuance to the conversation, touching on the studio's philosophy toward machine learning.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a latest statement, Larian's director outlined that the company is utilizing generative AI for specific preliminary purposes. These encompass enhancing presentation materials, creating rough visual ideas, and writing placeholder text.

Crucially, Vincke emphasized that the shipping material in the game will be crafted solely by real writers. "Our team is creating every line ourselves," he affirmed.

Larian is constantly growing our team of writers and are busily assembling dedicated writer rooms.

As concept art is being specifically called out — we presently have over twenty visual developers and have roles to fill for further artists.

All our efforts we do is supplementary and designed to enabling creatives to spend additional energy on the creative process.

Every AI system implemented properly is a boost to a artist's routine, never a stand-in for their craft.

Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path

The admission of using AI originally provoked backlash among some the community. In reply, Vincke offered more elaboration on online platforms.

"We use machine learning to gather inspiration, similar to we use Google and art books," he stated. "During the very early brainstorming phase we use it as a basic framework for composition which we then swap out with original illustrations."

He added, "Our studio recruits creatives for their inherent skill, not for their willingness to execute what a algorithm proposes."

Three Pillars of Practical Application

Vincke had earlier outlined the company's targeted strategy to this technology, categorizing its use into key functions:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: Areas like refining animations, voice editing, and pipeline-specific tasks like adjusting assets for various species.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using tools to rapidly prototype simple models of scenarios to experiment with concepts ahead of complete implementation.
  • Experimental Frontiers: Investigating how machine learning could in the future enhance emergent player agency, specifically in creating player-driven narratives in a detailed game universe.

He clearly stated that core creative areas — such as writing — are are absolutely not fields where the company is reducing creative input. Conversely, Larian is actively hiring in these exact positions.

"Larian is neither shipping a game with machine-made assets, nor planning on trimming down staff to replace them with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
