The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a major prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
