The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, revealed a new introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

Overall, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the music selection.

The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
