Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
